THE SHORT STORY

After working for the largest recruitment company in the world (TMP Worldwide, now known as Hudson), and then the biggest private recruitment company in Queensland, I launched Arete Executive in February 2009. 

Whilst it was possibly not the best move to launch an executive recruitment company at the height of the GFC, fortune favoured the brave and 15 years later, Arete continues to be regarded as one of the top executive search firms in Australia. 

Always ready for a new adventure, I am now focused on teaching others the secrets to win the war for talent or secure the role of a lifetime. 

Official Bio

Richard was born in Edmonton Canada to English parents who had moved there for their academic careers.  After two years of -42 degree centigrade winters, they escaped the cold to move to the USA and then to Sydney Australia when Richard was four.

After finishing high school in 1985, Richard had grand aspirations to become a rock star and toured Australia in bands playing guitar and singing.  His musical claim to fame is that his band, Leather Zen, won the Queensland Rock Awards in 1990, beating many other local artists including Powderfinger.  The band then moved to Melbourne chasing a record contract, which eventually was given to Keith Urban instead (I think the record label made the right choice, all things considered).

Richard returned to Brisbane to complete a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Marketing and Human Resources.  He then worked for James Hardie and subsequently with P&O Services, initially in sales roles and then moving into operational and general management positions.  For four years, he lived in Cairns, Australia.  He ended up in a national role with a facilities management company, leading a team of approximately 750 staff across Australia.

In 2002, as Richard was completing an executive MBA, he started to consider his next career move.  A recruiter that Richard had been a client of suggested Richard consider a career in recruitment, and as they say, the rest is history.
